I caught the end of the Patriots vs. Eagles game on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. With 1:34 left in the 3rd Quarter, it was a tight game, and the Eagles scored a touchdown to go up 28 to 24. This inspired Al Michaels (an accomplished and professional announcer) to blurt out something like, “Wow! This game has turned into a real dog fight.” Then, he caught himself and mumbled, “That was a bad choice of words.”
For those that don’t immediately get it… Falcons Quarterback, Michael Vick, is now an infamous figure in pro football because he was indicted on several counts connected to his involvement in a dog fighting ring.
This situation perfectly illustrates how sayings quietly enter our vocabulary, and we use them in daily conversation without thinking about their origin or meaning. Now that the NFL is marred by one of their own promoting the corruption of dog fighting, that metaphor is off limits.

dude, i totally noticed that too and I was talking to Bea about it during the game. it is also interesting how self-aware Al Michaels was as he was speaking.
